Watersoftening is the treatment of water to reduce its hardness, typically by removing calcium and magnesium ions. Soft water forms less scale in pipes and boilers and improves the effectiveness of soaps and detergents. Hardness is commonly expressed as milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) equivalents and is classified as temporary hardness, largely due to bicarbonate minerals that can be removed by boiling, and permanent hardness, from non-bicarbonate salts such as chlorides and sulfates of calcium and magnesium.

Common softening methods include lime softening, ion exchange, and membrane processes. Lime softening adds lime (calcium hydroxide) to precipitate hardness as calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide, which are removed as sludge. The lime-soda process combines lime with soda ash to precipitate calcium and magnesium as insoluble compounds. Ion exchange uses cation-exchange resins to replace Ca2+ and Mg2+ with Na+ or K+, with periodic regeneration using a sodium chloride or potassium chloride brine. Reverse osmosis and electrodialysis remove most dissolved minerals, including hardness, through membrane-based separation. Sequestration or chelation with additives can keep hardness ions in solution without removing them, though this is more common in specific industrial applications.

In domestic use, household water softeners typically employ ion exchange with periodic brine regeneration. Softened water can alter taste and may increase pipe or appliance corrosion risks if not properly managed; brine discharge also raises environmental considerations. Industrial softening is often integrated with overall water treatment, balancing efficiency, waste handling, and energy use.
