Water dispensers are devices designed to provide accessible drinking water on demand. They are commonly found in homes, offices, schools, and public facilities. Configurations include bottle-fed coolers that rely on large water bottles and plumbed (bottleless) units connected to a building’s water supply. Sizes range from compact countertop models to freestanding towers.

Most units offer cold water and some offer hot water as well; a few provide room-temperature water. Cooling is achieved by a refrigerant compressor or thermoelectric system, while heating uses an electric coil. Dispensing is typically controlled by push levers, taps, or touchless sensors. Many models include a child-safety lock on the hot-water tap. Filtration is common, removing chlorine or sediment and sometimes improving taste; some units combine filtration with mineral enhancement.

Key components include a water reservoir, cooling and heating circuits, a filtration cartridge, a drip tray, and a dispensing nozzle. In bottle-fed models the reservoir is continually replenished by new bottles; in bottleless units it is fed by the building supply. Regular maintenance includes cleaning and sanitizing the internal lines, replacing filters, and checking for leaks. Bottles should be stored and handled hygienically to prevent contamination.

Safety and environmental considerations: energy use varies by model, and refrigerants may be subject to regulations. Bottle-fed machines create plastic bottle waste, while bottleless systems reduce packaging but require proper sanitization and water treatment. Units may carry local electrical and plumbing safety certifications.
