A waqif is an individual who establishes a waqf, which is an Islamic endowment of property, typically real estate, for religious or charitable purposes. The concept of waqf is rooted in Islamic law and has a long history of practice. The property endowed in a waqf is held in trust and its usufruct, or benefits, are used for specific purposes outlined by the waqif. These purposes can range widely, including the upkeep of mosques, the support of schools and hospitals, the provision of aid to the poor, or the maintenance of family members.

The establishment of a waqf is a voluntary act undertaken by the waqif. The waqif must be of sound mind and legally competent to make such an endowment. The terms of the waqf are determined by the waqif at the time of its creation and are typically laid out in a deed or declaration. Once established, a waqf is generally irrevocable and perpetual, meaning it cannot be easily dissolved or altered. The waqf property is managed by a trustee, known as a mutawalli, who is responsible for administering the endowment according to the conditions set by the waqif and Islamic law.
