vöðvafruman

Vöðvafruman, also known as a muscle cell or myocyte, is a specialized cell type found in muscle tissue. These cells are elongated and often multinucleated, meaning they contain multiple nuclei within a single cell membrane. The primary function of vöðvafruman is to generate force and movement through a process called contraction.

The cytoplasm of a vöðvafruman is densely packed with myofibrils, which are long, cylindrical structures composed of contractile proteins, primarily actin and myosin. The arrangement of these filaments within the myofibrils creates a striated appearance in skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, giving them their characteristic striped look. The interaction between actin and myosin filaments, triggered by electrical signals, causes the myofibrils to slide past each other, resulting in muscle shortening and force generation.

There are three main types of vöðvafruman: skeletal muscle cells, cardiac muscle cells, and smooth muscle cells. Skeletal muscle cells are responsible for voluntary movements, cardiac muscle cells form the heart muscle and are responsible for pumping blood, and smooth muscle cells are found in the walls of internal organs and are responsible for involuntary movements. Each type has unique structural and functional characteristics adapted to its specific role within the body.
