Vörösvértestképzés, or erythropoiesis, is the process by which red blood cells (erythrocytes) are produced. This vital biological process primarily occurs in the bone marrow of adults. The development of red blood cells is a complex, multi-stage process that begins with hematopoietic stem cells. These pluripotent stem cells differentiate into progenitor cells, which then mature through a series of identifiable stages.

The early stages involve recognizable changes in cell size and nuclear morphology. As the cell matures, the nucleus shrinks and is eventually expelled, a process known as enucleation. Simultaneously, the cytoplasm changes in color and content, accumulating hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport. The primary hormone that regulates erythropoiesis is erythropoietin (EPO), which is produced mainly by the kidneys in response to low oxygen levels in the blood. EPO stimulates the bone marrow to increase the production of red blood cells.

Nutritional factors play a crucial role in vörösvértestképzés. Iron is essential for the synthesis of hemoglobin, while vitamin B12 and folic acid are critical for DNA synthesis and cell division, necessary for the rapid proliferation of red blood cell precursors. Deficiencies in these nutrients can lead to anemia, a condition characterized by a reduced number of red blood cells or a lower-than-normal amount of hemoglobin. Once mature, red blood cells are released into the bloodstream to perform their function of delivering oxygen to tissues and carrying carbon dioxide back to the lungs. The lifespan of a red blood cell is approximately 120 days, after which they are removed from circulation by macrophages, primarily in the spleen and liver.
