Võtmevahetusprotokoll is the Estonian term for Key Exchange Protocol. In cryptography, a key exchange protocol is a method by which two parties can establish a shared secret key over an insecure communication channel. This shared secret key can then be used to encrypt subsequent communications between the parties. Without a secure method for agreeing on a key, an eavesdropper could potentially intercept and decrypt the messages.

Several different key exchange protocols exist, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. One of the most well-known is the Diffie-Hellman key exchange. This protocol allows two parties to compute a shared secret by exchanging public values. The security of Diffie-Hellman relies on the computational difficulty of the discrete logarithm problem. Another important protocol is the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) which offers similar security levels with smaller key sizes, making it more efficient for certain applications.

The primary goal of any võtmevahetusprotokoll is to ensure that even if an attacker can observe the communication during the key exchange process, they cannot determine the final shared secret key. This enables secure communication channels, such as those used in HTTPS for secure web browsing, virtual private networks (VPNs), and encrypted messaging applications. The careful selection and implementation of a robust key exchange protocol are fundamental to modern network security.
