Võtmevahetusprotokoll

Võtmevahetusprotokoll, in English referred to as key exchange protocol or key establishment protocol, is a cryptographic method used to establish a shared secret key between two or more parties over an insecure communication channel. This shared secret key can then be used to encrypt subsequent communications, ensuring their confidentiality and integrity.

The primary goal of a võtmevahetusprotokoll is to allow parties to agree on a secret key without any eavesdropper being able to determine that key, even if they can intercept all messages exchanged during the protocol. This is typically achieved through mathematical principles that are computationally difficult to reverse.

One of the most well-known and widely used võtmevahetusprotokoll is the Diffie-Hellman key exchange. This protocol relies on the mathematical properties of modular exponentiation. Other protocols, such as those used in Transport Layer Security (TLS) and its predecessor Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), also incorporate key exchange mechanisms, often utilizing Diffie-Hellman variants or other cryptographic primitives.

The security of a võtmevahetusprotokoll depends on the underlying mathematical problem being hard to solve and the correct implementation of the protocol. Vulnerabilities can arise from implementation flaws or from advances in computational power that make previously hard problems solvable.
