Vízhajtók, also known as diuretics, are substances that increase diuresis, which is the production of urine. This leads to increased salt and water excretion from the body. In medical contexts, diuretics are primarily used to treat conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema (fluid retention). By reducing the amount of fluid in the body, diuretics can lower blood pressure and alleviate swelling.

There are several classes of diuretics, each acting on different parts of the kidney tubules to achieve their effect. Common types include thiazide diuretics, loop diuretics, and potassium-sparing diuretics. Thiazides are often the first choice for treating high blood pressure. Loop diuretics are more potent and are used for severe fluid overload. Potassium-sparing diuretics are typically used in combination with other diuretics to prevent excessive potassium loss.

Diuretics can be obtained through prescription medications or, in some cases, certain foods and beverages are believed to have mild diuretic effects. Examples of foods sometimes cited for their diuretic properties include celery, asparagus, and watermelon, though their impact is generally much less significant than that of pharmaceutical diuretics.

While generally safe and effective when prescribed by a healthcare professional, diuretics can have side effects. These may include electrolyte imbalances (like low potassium or sodium), dehydration, and increased urination frequency. It is important to consult with a doctor before using any diuretic, whether a medication or a dietary change intended for fluid balance.
