Displacement redirects an impulse from a forbidden or unavailable target onto a safer one.

Rationalization involves creating logical excuses for behavior that is actually driven by irrational emotions. Reaction formation involves behaving in a way that is the opposite of one's true feelings. Regression is returning to an earlier stage of development when faced with stress. Sublimation channels unacceptable impulses into socially acceptable activities.

These mechanisms are considered normal aspects of human psychology. While they can be adaptive in managing stress and protecting mental well-being, overuse or excessive reliance on certain mechanisms can lead to maladaptive behaviors and psychological difficulties.
