Védintézmények, often translated as childcare institutions or early childhood education centers, are facilities in Hungary that provide care and education for children from infancy up to school age. These institutions play a crucial role in the development and socialization of young children, offering a structured environment for learning and play. The primary purpose of védintézmények is to support parents by providing a safe and stimulating place for their children during working hours, while also contributing to the children's cognitive, social, and emotional growth.

There are different types of védintézmények, with the most common being óvodák (kindergartens) for children aged three to six. Crèches, or bölcsődék, are available for infants and toddlers younger than three. These institutions are regulated by the state and must adhere to specific pedagogical guidelines and safety standards.
