Værmeldingsmodeller, also known as numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, are sophisticated computer programs that use mathematical equations to simulate the behavior of the Earth's atmosphere. These models take current atmospheric conditions as input, such as temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind speed, and then forecast how these variables will change over time. The foundation of these models lies in the laws of physics, particularly fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, which govern atmospheric processes.

The process begins with data assimilation, where vast amounts of observational data from various sources, including weather stations, satellites, weather balloons, and radar, are collected and processed. This data is used to create a three-dimensional snapshot of the current state of the atmosphere. This initial condition is then fed into the NWP model. The model divides the atmosphere into a grid of points, and at each point, it calculates the future state of the atmosphere based on the governing equations and the current conditions.

Different NWP models exist, varying in their resolution (the size of the grid cells), the complexity of their physical parameterizations (how they represent processes that are too small to be explicitly calculated, like cloud formation), and the geographical areas they cover. Global models aim to predict weather worldwide, while regional models focus on smaller areas with higher resolution. The output from these models is a set of predictions for various weather elements at different times and locations, which meteorologists then interpret to create weather forecasts for the public. Continuous development and refinement of these models are crucial for improving forecast accuracy.
