Våtflate is a term used in Norwegian construction to describe the surface areas that are designed to withstand moisture exposure, typically found in wet rooms such as bathrooms, showers, laundry rooms and other spaces where water and humidity are present. The concept covers floors and adjacent walls that are protected by waterproofing layers to prevent water from penetrating into the building structure. In practice, a våtflate includes the floor with drainage and the walls within the wet zone, finished with water-resistant materials such as tiles or other suitable coverings installed over a waterproofing membrane or coating.

The purpose of a våtflate is to control moisture, protect structural components, and prevent mold growth and water damage. Construction practice requires a continuous waterproofing system on all wetted surfaces, including joints, penetrations, and transitions to other rooms. The most common systems are sheet membranes or liquid-applied membranes applied to the substrate, followed by appropriate surfacing such as tiling. Compliance with national regulations and standards mandates proper detailing, installation, and inspection to ensure the våtflate remains impermeable during the building’s service life.

Maintenance involves regular inspection for cracks, leaks, or damaged seals, and timely repair or re-waterproofing if necessary. Proper ventilation and drying conditions in wet rooms also contribute to the long-term effectiveness of the våtflate.
