Växtdöd, which translates to plant death in English, refers to the irreversible cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living plant. This phenomenon can be caused by a multitude of factors, both biotic and abiotic. Biotic causes include diseases, such as fungal or bacterial infections, and pest infestations, where insects or other organisms damage or consume plant tissues to a fatal extent. Parasitic plants can also drain resources from their hosts, leading to the host's demise.

Abiotic factors encompass a wide range of environmental stresses. Extreme temperatures, both too high or too low, can damage cellular structures and disrupt metabolic processes. Insufficient or excessive water availability, leading to drought or waterlogging respectively, can impair nutrient uptake and oxygen supply to roots. Lack of sunlight, essential for photosynthesis, will eventually lead to starvation. Nutrient deficiencies or toxicities in the soil can also weaken plants to the point of death. Physical damage, such as from strong winds, hail, or mechanical injury, can also be a direct cause of växtdöd. Pollution, including air and soil contaminants, can poison plants. In essence, any condition that prevents a plant from carrying out its vital life processes can result in växtdöd.
