Vävnadshiop is a term originating from Swedish that literally translates to "tissue collapse." In a medical context, it refers to a condition where a lung partially or completely collapses. This happens when air enters the space between the lung and the chest wall, known as the pleural space, creating pressure that pushes the lung inward. This condition is also commonly known as pneumothorax.

The causes of vävnadshiop can be varied. It can occur spontaneously, particularly in tall, thin young men, without any apparent underlying lung disease. This is termed spontaneous pneumothorax. Alternatively, it can arise due to trauma, such as a direct blow to the chest or a penetrating injury. Medical procedures, like biopsies or the insertion of central venous catheters, can also inadvertently lead to lung collapse. Furthermore, underlying lung conditions like emphysema, asthma, or cystic fibrosis can increase the risk of developing vävnadshiop.

Symptoms of vävnadshiop typically include sudden chest pain and shortness of breath. The severity of symptoms often correlates with the extent of lung collapse. In more severe cases, a rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, and a bluish tint to the skin may be observed. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, listening to breath sounds, and imaging techniques such as a chest X-ray or CT scan. Treatment depends on the size of the collapse and the patient's symptoms, ranging from observation for small, asymptomatic collapses to chest tube insertion to remove air and re-expand the lung in larger or symptomatic cases.
