Väripyörä, often translated as color wheel, is a visual representation of colors arranged in a circle. It is a fundamental tool in art and design, used to understand color relationships and create harmonious color schemes. The traditional color wheel is based on RYB (Red, Yellow, Blue) primary colors, from which all other colors are theoretically derived through mixing.

The primary colors are placed at equidistant points on the wheel. Secondary colors (orange, green, violet) are created by mixing two primary colors and are positioned between their respective primaries. Tertiary colors are formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color and occupy the spaces between them.

Different color schemes can be derived from the color wheel. Complementary colors are opposite each other on the wheel and create high contrast when used together. Analogous colors are adjacent on the wheel and produce a sense of harmony and unity. Triadic color schemes involve three colors equally spaced around the wheel, offering vibrant and balanced combinations.

Modern color theory also utilizes other color models, such as RGB (Red, Green, Blue) for additive color mixing (used in screens) and CMY(K) (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) for subtractive color mixing (used in printing). While the fundamental principles of color relationships remain, these models offer different visual representations and applications. The color wheel serves as a foundational concept for understanding how colors interact and how to effectively use them in various creative disciplines.
