Väriintensiteettiä, often translated as color intensity or saturation, refers to the purity or vividness of a color. It describes how much a color deviates from a neutral gray of the same lightness. A highly saturated color is pure and vibrant, appearing rich and intense. Conversely, a color with low saturation is closer to gray, appearing muted, dull, or desaturated.

The concept of color intensity is fundamental in various fields, including art, design, and color science. In art, artists use saturation to create visual impact, evoke emotions, or establish a particular mood. For example, a brightly saturated red might convey passion or danger, while a desaturated red might suggest calmness or melancholy.

In color theory, saturation is one of the three main components that define a color, alongside hue and lightness. Hue refers to the pure color itself, like red, blue, or green. Lightness, or value, indicates how light or dark a color is. Saturation quantifies the strength of the hue.

The measurement of color intensity can be achieved through different color models. In the HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) color model, saturation is explicitly represented as a value, often ranging from 0% (completely desaturated, i.e., gray) to 100% (fully saturated). Similarly, the HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) model also includes saturation as a key parameter. Digital image processing and color management systems rely on these models to accurately reproduce and manipulate color intensity. The perception of color intensity can also be influenced by surrounding colors and lighting conditions.
