Väriintensiteetti, also known as color intensity or saturation, refers to the purity or vividness of a color. It describes how much gray is present in a color. A highly saturated color is pure and bright, while a desaturated color is dull and closer to gray.

In color theory, saturation is one of the three main characteristics of a color, alongside hue (the actual color, like red or blue) and brightness or value (how light or dark the color is). Different color models represent saturation in various ways. For example, in the HSI (Hue, Saturation, Intensity) model, saturation is explicitly defined. In the HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) model, saturation is also a key component.

Artists and designers use color intensity to evoke specific moods and create visual effects. Highly saturated colors can be vibrant and energetic, while low saturation can create a more subdued or sophisticated feel. In digital imaging and design software, saturation is often controlled by a slider that allows users to adjust the intensity of colors in an image.

The perception of color intensity can be influenced by surrounding colors and lighting conditions. For instance, a color may appear more intense when placed next to a complementary color. Understanding and manipulating color intensity is fundamental to effective visual communication and artistic expression.
