Värierottumisen, also known as color separation, is a fundamental process in printing and digital imaging where an image is divided into multiple individual color layers, or separations. Each separation represents a specific color component that will be printed or displayed. The most common system for color separation is CMYK, which stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black). In this system, any color in an image can be approximated by combining different percentages of these four inks.

The process begins with a full-color image. This image is then analyzed by a color separation software. The software determines how much of each CMYK ink is needed to accurately reproduce the colors of the original image. For example, a bright red might require a high percentage of magenta and yellow, with little or no cyan and black. Conversely, a deep blue would need significant cyan and magenta, with minimal yellow and black.

Once the separations are created, they are used in the printing process. Each color separation is transferred to a printing plate. During printing, each plate is inked with its corresponding CMYK color and then pressed onto the paper or substrate in precise registration, one after another. The overlapping of these inks creates the illusion of a full spectrum of colors. In digital displays, similar principles apply, where pixels are controlled to emit specific amounts of red, green, and blue light to form the final image. Color separation is crucial for achieving accurate and vibrant color reproduction in both print and digital media.
