Värienäytöt, known in English as color displays, are electronic devices that present visual information through a range of colors. These displays are ubiquitous in modern technology, forming the visual interface for everything from smartphones and televisions to computers and digital signage. The fundamental principle behind color displays is the manipulation of light to create different hues.

Early color displays often relied on cathode ray tube (CRT) technology. CRTs used electron beams that scanned across a phosphor-coated screen, exciting the phosphors to emit light. By using three different types of phosphors (red, green, and blue) and controlling the intensity of the electron beams, a full spectrum of colors could be generated.

Modern color displays predominantly use liquid crystal display (LCD) or organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technologies. LCDs work by passing light through a polarizing filter and then through liquid crystals. The orientation of these crystals can be altered by an electric current, which in turn controls how much light passes through a second polarizing filter. Color filters (red, green, and blue) are placed in front of the pixels to create the desired colors. OLED displays, on the other hand, utilize organic compounds that emit light when an electric current is applied. Each pixel in an OLED display is an individual light source, allowing for deeper blacks and more vibrant colors compared to many LCDs. The quality of a color display is often measured by its color accuracy, resolution, brightness, and contrast ratio.
