Välittäjäainemekanismi, often translated as neurotransmitter mechanism, refers to the process by which nerve cells (neurons) communicate with each other. This communication is essential for all nervous system functions, from simple reflexes to complex thought processes. The fundamental unit of this communication is the synapse, a specialized junction between two neurons.

When an electrical signal, called an action potential, reaches the end of a neuron's axon, it triggers the release of chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are stored in small sacs called vesicles within the axon terminal. Upon stimulation, these vesicles fuse with the cell membrane and release their neurotransmitter contents into the synaptic cleft, the tiny gap between the two neurons.

The released neurotransmitters then diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to specific receptor proteins on the surface of the postsynaptic neuron. This binding causes a change in the electrical potential of the postsynaptic neuron, either exciting it (making it more likely to fire an action potential) or inhibiting it (making it less likely to fire). This process is highly selective, as each neurotransmitter has specific receptors it can bind to.

Once their job is done, neurotransmitters are either broken down by enzymes in the synaptic cleft or reabsorbed back into the presynaptic neuron through a process called reuptake. This rapid clearance of neurotransmitters is crucial for precise and timely signal transmission, preventing continuous stimulation or inhibition. The delicate balance of neurotransmitter synthesis, release, receptor binding, and degradation is fundamental to the proper functioning of the nervous system.
