Välformade is a Swedish adjective meaning “well-formed,” used to describe objects, utterances, or structures that adhere to a defined set of rules or a formal grammar. The term appears across several disciplines, notably linguistics, computer science, and logic. Its counterpart is illformad or ill-formed.

In linguistics, välformade refers to sentences or phrases that conform to the syntactic and grammatical rules of a language. Well-formedness conditions constrain word order, agreement, subcategorization, and other grammatical features. Ill-formed sentences violate these constraints, though they can be studied to understand grammar, processing, or sociolinguistic variation. Well-formedness is often distinguished from semantic plausibility; a sentence may be syntactically correct but semantically odd.

In computing and formal systems, välformade describes strings, expressions, or documents that follow a specified formal grammar or schema. A well-formed program, expression, or document can be parsed unambiguously by a validator or compiler. Common examples include well-formed XML documents with properly nested and closed tags, and well-formed formulas in logic that follow syntax rules without contradictions in structure.

It does not by itself guarantee correctness of meaning or functionality, but it is a prerequisite for reliable processing.
