Vägstarten is a Swedish term used to describe the start of a road project or road-related work. In Swedish infrastructure planning and construction the word denotes both the practical commencement of construction activities and, in many cases, a ceremonial kickoff. The notion is common in municipal and regional planning where roads, highways or major maintenance works require formal approval and mobilization of contractors.

Typically, vägstarten follows a planning and permitting phase. After design completion, environmental assessments and procurement, a project manager announces the start date, coordinates contractor mobilization, and arranges resources such as equipment and traffic management plans. When conducted as a ceremony, vägstarten may involve municipal officials, project stakeholders, and local residents; a plaque, a symbolic breaking of ground, or remarks are sometimes part of the event. The word serves to communicate publicly that work is entering an active phase and that the project has funding and a schedule.
