Vulkanointireaktiota, commonly known as vulcanization, is a chemical process that transforms natural or synthetic rubber into more durable materials. This is achieved by adding sulfur or other curatives, which form cross-links between polymer chains. These cross-links prevent the rubber from deforming permanently under stress and increase its tensile strength and elasticity.

The discovery of vulcanization is often attributed to Charles Goodyear in 1839. He accidentally dropped a mixture of rubber and sulfur onto a hot stove, observing that the resulting material was less sticky and more resilient. This breakthrough revolutionized the rubber industry, making it possible to produce a wide range of products, from tires to hoses and footwear.

The vulcanization process typically involves heating the rubber mixture with sulfur at elevated temperatures, usually between 140 and 160 degrees Celsius. The sulfur atoms create bridges between the long, flexible polymer chains, effectively creating a three-dimensional network. Without vulcanization, rubber would become soft and sticky when heated and brittle when cooled. Vulcanization significantly improves its resistance to temperature changes, abrasion, and chemical degradation.

While sulfur is the most common vulcanizing agent, other compounds like peroxides, metal oxides, and accelerators can also be used, depending on the desired properties of the final rubber product. The specific temperature, time, and type of vulcanizing agent used influence the degree of cross-linking and thus the final characteristics of the vulcanized rubber.
