Vowformula is a formal construct used in theoretical phonology and computational linguistics to express vowel-based constraints and alternations as explicit formulas. It captures how vowels within a word interact—such as harmony, rounding, or vowel deletion—by turning phonological generalizations into symbolic rules that can be manipulated by algorithms.

A typical vowformula comprises a set of vowel variables, a feature description for each variable (for example, [+high], [+back], [+round]), and logical operators that relate vowels across positions or morphemes. Formally, a vowformula can be written using predicate logic or finite-state-inspired notation, with dependencies that constrain the values of vowels in suffixes, prefixes, or stem-internal positions.
