A voorfilterspons, or pre-filter sponge, is a soft, open-cell sponge used in filtration systems to capture larger debris before it reaches the main filter media or the pump. It is commonly employed in aquariums and pond filters to protect equipment, reduce clogging, and improve overall filtration efficiency.

The sponge is typically made of polyurethane foam with a defined pore size. The choice of pore size affects what particles are trapped: finer foams catch smaller debris but can clog more quickly, while coarser foams allow larger debris to pass but provide less filtration. The sponge is usually placed at the intake side of the filter or inside a dedicated pre-filter chamber, sometimes surrounding or covering the intake tube.

Function and benefits include mechanical filtration of particulate matter, protection of pumps and impellers from clogging, and a surface for beneficial bacteria to colonize. By removing larger particles early, the main filter media work more efficiently and water flow remains more stable. It can also reduce noise and the risk of microbubbles in some setups.

Maintenance involves regular rinsing in tank water (not tap water) to remove accumulated debris while preserving beneficial bacteria. The sponge should be inspected for wear and replaced when it becomes too degraded or densely clogged, as a saturated sponge can reduce flow. Over-cleaning should be avoided to prevent releasing detritus back into the system.
