Volumentérképezés, also known as volume rendering, is a set of techniques used in visualization to display a 2D projection of a 3D discretely sampled dataset. Unlike surface rendering, which represents objects by their boundaries, volume rendering depicts the entire volume of sampled data. This allows for the visualization of internal structures and tissues that would otherwise be hidden.

The fundamental principle of volume rendering involves sampling the volumetric data along rays cast from the viewpoint through each pixel of the image plane. As a ray travels through the volume, it accumulates color and opacity values from the sampled data points. These accumulated values are then combined, typically using a transfer function, to determine the final color of the pixel. The transfer function maps data values to optical properties like color and transparency, allowing users to highlight specific features or regions of interest.

Commonly used algorithms for volume rendering include ray casting, splatting, and shear-warp factorization. Ray casting is conceptually straightforward but can be computationally intensive. Splatting processes the data by "splatting" each voxel onto the image plane, accumulating color and depth information. Shear-warp factorization is an efficient algorithm that uses shearing and warping operations to project the volume.

Volume rendering finds applications in various fields, including medical imaging (e.g., CT scans, MRI), scientific visualization (e.g., fluid dynamics, weather patterns), and industrial inspection. It enables researchers and practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of complex 3D structures and phenomena by providing direct visual insight into volumetric data.
