Volumeters are instruments designed to determine the volume of a fluid or gas. They may measure volume directly by displacement of a fixed-volume chamber or indirectly by integrating a flow rate over time to produce a cumulative volume. The term covers both laboratory devices that provide known volumes and process instruments that track volumetric flow.

Positive-displacement volumeters capture a precise amount of liquid in each cycle through a mechanically isolated chamber. Examples include piston, diaphragm, and bellows-based designs. These devices are valued for accuracy with viscous or entrained liquids and for delivering direct, easily readout volume values. They are common in dosing, batching, and custody-transfer applications where dosage accuracy is critical.

In laboratory settings, volumeters include calibrated glassware and glass-pinished instruments such as burettes, graduated cylinders, measuring pipettes, and volumetric flasks. These tools rely on precise graduation, cleanliness, and temperature-controlled conditions to deliver or measure known volumes with high accuracy for analytical work.

Volumetric flow meters operate by integrating flow rate over time to produce a cumulative volume. Turbine, gear, and rotary-displacement meters are typical examples. These devices are used in pipelines, water and gas utilities, chemical processing, and industrial measurement where total volume over a period is more relevant than instantaneous flow rate. They require regular calibration to account for density, temperature, and wear.

Gas volumeters and certain liquid meters may normalize measurements to standard temperature and pressure or density conditions to express volume in standard units, enabling consistent billing and inventory control. Calibration and maintenance are essential for accuracy across volumeter types.
