volteins

Volteins are a hypothetical class of elementary excitations proposed in certain models of quantum electromagnetism and condensed-matter systems. The term combines volt- from voltage and -ein as in many particle names, reflecting its proposed role as a quantum of the local electric potential field.

Volteins are envisioned as bosonic quasiparticles arising as fluctuations of the local electrostatic potential in tightly confined nanoscale structures and metamaterials. In theoretical formulations they behave as light gauge bosons with a linear dispersion at low momenta and they couple to charge carriers, influencing conductivity and noise. They are not tied to a single material, but rather emerge in interacting lattice or continuum models where the potential field becomes dynamic.

In these models, volteins mediate interactions between charges, analogous to phonons for lattice vibrations but associated with potential energy rather than displacement. They can modify screening, enable novel energy transfer mechanisms, and produce distinctive signatures in spectral responses such as the low-frequency noise spectrum and nonlocal transport.

Experimental evidence for volteins remains speculative and unconfirmed. Proposals focus on engineered systems and precision spectroscopy where anomalous potential fluctuations might be observed; however, conventional explanations in terms of plasmons, phonons, defects, or two-level systems are difficult to exclude.
