volere

Volere is an Italian verb meaning to want or to wish. It is a highly common, irregular verb used to express desire, intention, or preference and is frequently followed by an infinitive, as in voglio mangiare (I want to eat) or vogliamo partire (we want to leave). It also appears in polite requests through the conditional form vorrei.

Conjugation and forms: volere is irregular in many tenses. In the present indicative the forms are voglio, vuoi, vuole, vogliamo, volete, vogliono. The imperfect is volevo, volevi, voleva, volevamo, volevate, volevano. The passato remoto (literary) forms are volli, volesti, volle, vollemmo, voleste, vollero. The passato prossimo uses avere as auxiliary: ho voluto, hai voluto, ha voluto, abbiamo voluto, avete voluto, hanno voluto. The future is vorrò, vorrai, vorrà, vorremo, vorrete, vorranno, and the conditional forms are vorrei, vorresti, vorrebbe, vorremmo, vorreste, vorrebbero. The present subjunctive is voglia (with all persons: voglia, vuoi sia? actually forms are voglia, voglia, vogliamo, vogliate, vogliano) and the imperfect subjunctive is volessi, volessi, volesse, volessimo, voleste, volessero. The gerund is volendo and the past participle voluto; the auxiliary in compound tenses is avere (ho voluto, non ho voluto).

Usage notes: volere governs infinitives to express desire, as in Voglio mangiare. In subordinate clauses expressing a wish about someone else, it takes the subjunctive after volere che: Voglio che tu venga. Vorrei is the standard polite alternative. Negation can express refusal or lack of willingness: Non voglio farlo; Non ho voluto dirlo. Volersi bene (to love each other) is a common reflexive construct, as in ti voglio bene. A well-known proverb using volere is Volere è potere (where there’s a will, there’s a way).
