Voimanotto, translated as power take-off (PTO), is a mechanical arrangement that transfers engine power to auxiliary equipment mounted on or driven by a machine, most commonly tractors and other agricultural or industrial machinery. It provides a means to power devices such as mowers, balers, pumps, threshers, grinders, and conveyors without requiring a separate engine on the implement.

The system typically consists of an input shaft connected to the engine or transmission, a clutch mechanism to engage or disengage, and an output shaft that powers the driven implement. PTO systems can be mechanical or hydraulic in principle; the most common form is a PTO shaft that runs at standardized speeds, commonly 540 or 1000 revolutions per minute, with modern tractors offering multiple speeds and eco or engine-off variants. Depending on the design, the PTO can be engaged via a hand lever, a foot pedal, or an electronic switch, sometimes with a live or independent PTO configuration that allows some operation while the main transmission is loaded or stopped.

Common uses include powering mowing decks, forage harvesters, balers, wood chippers, water pumps, and hydraulic pumps through a hydraulic system.

Safety: PTOs involve exposed rotating shafts and can cause severe injury. Guards and shields must be in place, the area kept clear, and the system must be disengaged and powered off before maintenance. Operators should ensure proper alignment and correct spline and shield compatibility per regional standards.
