vocalize

Vocalize is a verb that denotes producing voice or speech. It can mean to utter, speak aloud, or express something in words; to pronounce sounds using the vocal cords; or to sing or perform vocally, as in singing practice or warmups. The British variant is vocalise, and the noun form vocalization (or vocalisation) refers to the act or process of producing vocal sounds and to the sound produced.

Etymology: the word derives from Latin vocalis “of the voice,” from vox “voice.” In general usage, vocalize covers speaking aloud as well as articulating thoughts or feelings, and in music or singing contexts it frequently refers to vocal practice or performance.

In linguistics and phonetics, vocalization can refer to the use of voiced sounds, as opposed to voiceless sounds; the term emphasizes producing sound with the vocal cords. In broader contexts, it simply denotes the act of giving voice to something, whether through speech or sung expression.

In music and vocal pedagogy, to vocalize means to perform vocal exercises, such as scales and hums, to develop range, breath control, and clear articulation. This sense is common in training regimes for singers and choirs.
