Vlijten is a hamlet situated in the Dutch province of Gelderland, within the administrative boundary of the municipality of Winterswijk. The settlement lies to the west of the village of Emmerich, roughly 12 kilometres east of Winterswijk’s centre and about 80 kilometres north of Arnhem. Geographically, Vlijten lies in a low‑lying area of the Veluwe, at an elevation of roughly 20 metres above sea level, and is drained by a small network of ditches that feed into the nearby IJssel river basin.

Historically, Vlijten was established in the early 17th century as a modest cluster of farmhouses that served the surrounding agricultural landscape. By the mid‑18th century the hamlet had grown to include a small watermill, which operated until the late 19th century and was later restored as a private residence. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the local economy remained predominantly agrarian, with dairy and crop farming providing the main source of employment. A few small textile workshops were also present, catering to the demand from the nearby towns of Winterswijk and Emmerich.

Today Vlijten retains its rural character, with most properties being small family farms or holiday cottages. The population is estimated at around fifty inhabitants, making it one of the smaller settlements in the municipality. The hamlet’s central landmark is the 18th‑century Saint Martin’s Chapel, a modest stone church that still holds occasional services and serves as a site for local community events. Public transport links are limited; residents typically rely on personal vehicles or the infrequent bus service that connects Winterswijk to Emmerich. The surrounding landscape is maintained for agricultural use, with occasional nature walks and cycling paths that attract visitors interested in the quiet rural environment of the Dutch Gelderland region.
