Vitljus (white light) is light that is perceived as colorless, consisting of a mixture of visible wavelengths. In human vision, when the spectral distribution contains a broad range of wavelengths that are roughly balanced, the light is perceived as white. If a beam of white light is passed through a prism, it reveals a continuous spectrum.

White light occurs naturally in sunlight and is present in moonlight as reflected sunlight. Artificial sources include incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, and various light-emitting diodes. Incandescent sources emit a continuous spectrum across the visible range; LED and fluorescent sources produce white light by combining or converting emission from discrete wavelengths. A common modern approach uses a blue LED with phosphor coating to produce broad-spectrum white light.

Two technical properties are widely used to characterize white light: correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI). CCT describes the perceived warmth or coolness of the light, in kelvin, with warm whites around 2700–3000 K and cool whites above 4000 K. CRI measures how accurately the light renders colors compared with a reference light source; typical high-quality white light has a CRI of 80–95.

In lighting design and photography, vitljus is valued for its ability to render colors faithfully and to illuminate spaces without adding color bias. The term encompasses a range of spectral power distributions, from continuous-spectrum sources to modern phosphor-converted LEDs, and is central to discussions of energy efficiency, human comfort, and visual tasks.
