Backpressure occurs when the pressure in the connected system becomes higher than the pressure in the distribution system, forcing water to flow in the reverse direction.

To prevent backflow, various devices and methods are employed. These include vacuum breakers, atmospheric vacuum breakers, pressure vacuum breakers, reduced pressure principle backflow preventers, and double check valve assemblies. The selection of an appropriate backflow prevention device depends on the degree of hazard associated with the cross-connection. Regular testing and maintenance of these devices are crucial to ensure their effectiveness. Water utilities and regulatory bodies often mandate the installation of backflow prevention assemblies in specific applications where contamination risks are high, such as in commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and irrigation systems.
