Visstidsanställd is a term used in Sweden for an employee employed under a fixed-term contract (tidsbegränsad anställning). The employment ends automatically when the term expires or when the defined project, task, or seasonal need is completed, unlike a tillsvidareanställning, which continues until further notice.

Common forms of fixed-term employment include allmän visstidsanställning (AV), used to cover temporary or general needs; vikariat, where the employee substitutes for someone who is absent; and säsongsarbete, for seasonal work. Provanställning (probationary employment) is a related arrangement used to evaluate a worker’s suitability and may lead to permanent employment, but it is treated separately from standard fixed-term contracts.

Duration and renewal: A visstidsanställning specifies a start date and either an end date or a description of the project. Contracts may be extended with new fixed-term agreements, subject to applicable laws and collective agreements. Repeated renewals or long total durations can, under some agreements, influence the employer’s obligations to convert the position to permanent status.

Rights and protections: Visstidsanställda have the core rights applicable to employees under Swedish law, including pay, minimum terms, safety, holiday rights, and access to sick and parental leave, as defined by law and applicable collective agreements. Their term ends at expiration, and dismissal during the term is governed by the contract and relevant rules. In many sectors, unions and employers negotiate specific rules on the use of fixed-term work and when conversion to permanent employment should occur.

Practical notes: Fixed-term contracts are common for temporary workloads, substitutes, and seasonal work. It is standard practice to have the contract in writing, with clear duration and conditions.
