Virtainduktiotestaus, often referred to as eddy current testing or ECT, is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and near-surface flaws in conductive materials. This technique relies on the principles of electromagnetic induction. A coil, energized by an alternating current, generates a time-varying magnetic field. When this coil is brought near a conductive material, the magnetic field induces circulating electrical currents within the material, known as eddy currents.

The behavior of these eddy currents is highly sensitive to the material's properties and any discontinuities present. If the material contains a flaw, such as a crack, void, or inclusion, it disrupts the flow of eddy currents. This disruption alters the impedance of the test coil, which can be measured and analyzed. Virtainduktiotestaus is particularly effective for inspecting ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic metals. Its applications are widespread, including detecting cracks in aircraft components, inspecting welds, measuring material thickness, and sorting metals based on their electrical conductivity. The method is relatively fast and can be automated, making it a valuable tool in various industries for quality control and material integrity assessment. The depth of penetration is limited and depends on the frequency of the alternating current and the material's conductivity and magnetic permeability.
