Virransuojat, also known as surge protectors or surge suppressors, are devices designed to protect electrical equipment from voltage spikes. These spikes, or surges, are brief increases in voltage that can exceed the normal operating level of an electrical system. They can be caused by various factors, including lightning strikes, power outages, and the switching of high-power electrical devices.

The primary function of a virransuojat is to divert excess voltage away from connected devices. When a surge occurs, the virransuojat detects the voltage increase and activates a component, typically a metal oxide varistor (MOV) or a silicon avalanche diode (SAD). This component acts like a temporary short circuit, shunting the excess current to the ground wire instead of allowing it to reach the sensitive electronics of plugged-in equipment.

Virransuojat are commonly found in power strips, single-outlet adapters, and as part of larger electrical installations. They are rated based on their ability to absorb energy (joule rating) and their clamping voltage, which is the voltage level at which they begin to divert excess current. A higher joule rating indicates a greater capacity to withstand and dissipate surge energy, offering better protection.

While virransuojat offer a valuable layer of defense against transient voltage, they are not foolproof. They are typically designed to handle a certain number of surges and a certain level of energy. Repeated or extremely powerful surges can degrade or destroy the protective components within the virransuojat, rendering it ineffective. Therefore, it is advisable to periodically inspect and potentially replace surge protectors, especially in areas prone to frequent electrical disturbances.
