Vinyl ethers are a class of organic compounds that contain a vinyl group (CH2=CH-) directly attached to an oxygen atom. The general formula for a vinyl ether is R-O-CH=CH2, where R represents an alkyl, aryl, or other organic group. The defining characteristic of vinyl ethers is the presence of the C=C double bond adjacent to the oxygen atom. This structure imparts unique chemical reactivity to these molecules.

Industrially, vinyl ethers find applications as monomers for polymers, as intermediates in organic synthesis, and in adhesives and coatings. Their ability to undergo facile polymerization makes them valuable in creating specialized materials. The reactivity of the vinyl ether group also allows for various chemical transformations, such as hydrolysis to form aldehydes and alcohols, and cycloaddition reactions. Due to their reactive nature, vinyl ethers are typically stored and handled with care.
