Vinyyliä is the Finnish word for vinyl. It most commonly refers to vinyl records, which are analog sound storage devices. These records are typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), hence the name "vinyl." The sound information is stored as a series of microscopic grooves pressed into the surface of the record.

A vinyl record is played using a turntable, which spins the record at a constant speed, usually 33 1/3, 45, or 78 revolutions per minute. A stylus, or needle, on the end of a tonearm is then placed in the groove. As the record spins, the stylus vibrates in response to the undulations of the groove. These vibrations are then amplified and converted into audible sound.

Vinyl records were the dominant format for music consumption from the early 20th century until the rise of digital formats like CDs in the late 20th century. Despite the prevalence of digital audio, vinyl has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years. Many audiophiles and music enthusiasts prefer the perceived warmth and sonic characteristics of vinyl playback, as well as the tactile experience of handling physical media and album artwork. The production and sale of new vinyl records have increased significantly, making it a niche but enduring part of the music industry.
