Vingumürgistus, also known as carbon monoxide poisoning, is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by breathing in too much carbon monoxide gas. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials. Common sources include faulty furnaces, car exhaust, gas stoves, and fires.

When inhaled, carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells much more readily than oxygen does. This reduces the blood's ability to carry oxygen to vital organs and tissues, such as the brain and heart. Symptoms of vingumürgistus can vary depending on the concentration of CO and the duration of exposure.

Mild symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. As exposure increases, more severe symptoms can develop, such as confusion, loss of coordination, chest pain, shortness of breath, and even loss of consciousness. In severe cases, vingumürgistus can lead to permanent brain damage, heart problems, or death.

Diagnosis is typically made based on the patient's symptoms and a history of potential exposure. Blood tests can measure the level of carboxyhemoglobin (CO bound to hemoglobin) to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment involves immediately removing the affected individual from the source of carbon monoxide and administering 100% oxygen. In severe cases, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be used. Prevention is key and involves ensuring proper ventilation of fuel-burning appliances, regular maintenance of heating systems, and avoiding running vehicles in enclosed spaces.
