Vindinstrument is a term that broadly refers to musical instruments that produce sound through the vibration of air. This vibration is typically initiated by the player's breath or by a mechanical device that blows air. Vindinstrumenter are broadly categorized into two main families: woodwinds and brass instruments.

Woodwind instruments historically were made of wood, though many modern examples are constructed from metal or other materials. Sound is produced by blowing air across an edge, causing it to vibrate, or by using a reed. Examples include the flute, clarinet, oboe, and saxophone. The pitch is usually altered by opening and closing keys or holes along the body of the instrument, which changes the effective length of the vibrating air column.

Brass instruments produce sound through the buzzing of the player's lips against a mouthpiece. This vibration is amplified and resonated by the instrument's tubing, which is typically made of brass or other metal. Common brass instruments include the trumpet, trombone, French horn, and tuba. Pitch is changed either by altering the lip tension or by using valves or a slide to change the length of the tubing, thereby altering the resonant frequencies. Both woodwind and brass instruments are essential components of orchestras, bands, and various musical ensembles across diverse genres.
