Viitekehästä, often translated as "reference frame" or "frame of reference," is a fundamental concept in physics and other sciences. It describes a set of coordinates or a system of measurement used to describe the position, motion, and orientation of an object. Essentially, it's the viewpoint from which observations are made.

There are two main types of reference frames: inertial and non-inertial. An inertial reference frame is one that is not accelerating, meaning it is either at rest or moving at a constant velocity. In an inertial frame, Newton's first law of motion, the law of inertia, holds true: an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

A non-inertial reference frame, on the other hand, is accelerating. In such frames, fictitious forces, like the Coriolis force or centrifugal force, appear to act on objects. These forces are not real in the sense of being caused by physical interactions but arise from the observer's own acceleration.

The choice of reference frame is crucial for simplifying problems and accurately describing physical phenomena. For instance, describing the motion of a planet from Earth's perspective (a rotating, accelerating reference frame) is more complex than describing it from the Sun's perspective (approximating an inertial reference frame). Relativity, particularly Einstein's theories, further revolutionized the understanding of reference frames, showing that space and time themselves are relative to the observer's reference frame.
