Vihreäpesu, or greenwashing, refers to the practice of making a misleading claim about the environmental benefits of a product, service, or company. It is a deceptive marketing tactic where a company or organization attempts to portray itself as more environmentally friendly than it actually is. This can involve exaggerated claims, cherry-picked data, or the use of vague and unsubstantiated terms like "eco-friendly" or "natural" without providing concrete evidence.

The motivations behind greenwashing can vary. Some companies may engage in it to attract environmentally conscious consumers, improve their public image, or gain a competitive advantage. In other cases, it may stem from a genuine, albeit poorly executed, attempt to communicate environmental efforts. However, regardless of intent, the effect is to mislead consumers and hinder genuine progress towards sustainability.

Identifying greenwashing can be challenging for consumers. Common red flags include a lack of specific details, irrelevant environmental claims, the use of misleading imagery or colors (like green hues), or focusing on a single, minor environmental aspect while ignoring larger, more significant negative impacts. Regulatory bodies and consumer advocacy groups are increasingly scrutinizing such claims to protect consumers and promote transparency in environmental marketing. The term originates from the English "greenwashing" and is widely used in Finnish discourse.
