Vibriosis is a term used to describe illness caused by Vibrio bacteria. These bacteria are naturally found in coastal waters, including bays and estuaries, particularly during warmer months. They are most commonly associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood, especially oysters.

There are various species of Vibrio, and not all cause illness. The most common species responsible for human infections are Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio alginolyticus. Vibrio vulnificus can cause a severe bloodstream infection, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems or liver disease. Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio alginolyticus typically cause gastrointestinal illness, such as diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

In addition to ingestion, Vibrio bacteria can also cause infections through open wounds that come into contact with contaminated seawater. These wound infections can range from mild skin irritation to severe tissue damage. Symptoms of vibriosis depend on the species of Vibrio and the mode of infection. Prevention strategies include avoiding raw or undercooked seafood, practicing good hygiene after handling seafood, and protecting open wounds from seawater exposure. Medical treatment often involves antibiotics, and supportive care is crucial for severe cases.
