The vibraphone is a percussion instrument in the mallet keyboard family. It consists of a set of tuned metal bars, usually made of aluminum, arranged like a piano keyboard. Beneath each bar is a resonator tube of varying length, which amplifies the sound. A unique feature of the vibraphone is the presence of motor-driven rotating discs, or "fans," located at the top of each resonator tube. When activated, these discs open and close the tops of the tubes, creating a vibrato effect, hence the instrument's name.

The vibraphone is played using mallets, which are typically made with yarn or cord-wrapped heads. The player strikes the bars to produce notes, and the sustain of each note can be controlled by a damper pedal, similar to that of a piano. This pedal allows for legato playing or precise articulation. The vibraphone's sound is often described as clear, mellow, and shimmering, with a distinct sustain and the characteristic vibrato. It is commonly used in jazz ensembles, classical music, and orchestral settings. Its versatility allows it to play melodic lines, harmonies, and percussive effects. The instrument was invented in the United States in the 1920s and gained popularity throughout the 20th century.
