vgdisplay

vgdisplay is a Linux command-line utility that displays information about one or more volume groups (VGs) in the Logical Volume Manager (LVM) system. It is part of the LVM2 family of user-space tools and is used to inspect VG properties such as size, free space, the number of physical volumes in the group, and the allocation of physical extents (PEs). Running vgdisplay without arguments lists all known volume groups; providing a specific VG name returns details for that VG only.

The common output fields include the volume group name, size, physical extent size, total PE, allocated PE, free PE, and VG UUID, along with metadata format and access status. When invoked with verbose options, vgdisplay can reveal additional details about the physical volumes comprising the VG and their state.

Usage and options: vgdisplay [vg_name] prints the information for the specified volume group or all volume groups if none is given. Options such as -v or --verbose increase the level of detail. The command is often used in scripts or alongside related tools to audit capacity, verify availability of space for allocation, or troubleshoot issues in the LVM stack.

Limitations: vgdisplay reports information from the current metadata and typically requires root privileges.
