A vezir, also spelled vizier, was a high-ranking political advisor or minister in many Muslim governments. The term originates from the Arabic word "wazir," meaning "burden-bearer" or "one who helps to carry a load." Vezirs served as chief ministers to caliphs, sultans, or other rulers, acting as their principal deputies and overseeing the day-to-day administration of the state.

The role and power of a vezir varied significantly depending on the historical period and the specific empire. In some cases, a vezir held immense authority, wielding power comparable to the ruler himself and effectively governing the realm. In other instances, the vezir's position was more administrative, focused on managing specific departments like the treasury or the military.
