Vetyautojen, which translates to "hydrogen cars" in Finnish, refers to automobiles that are powered by hydrogen. These vehicles can operate in two primary ways: as fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) or through internal combustion engines modified to run on hydrogen.

Fuel cell electric vehicles use hydrogen gas in a fuel cell to produce electricity, which then powers an electric motor. This process generates only water vapor as a byproduct, making FCEVs a zero-emission option at the point of use. The hydrogen is typically stored in high-pressure tanks within the vehicle.

Hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles (H2-ICE) are similar to conventional gasoline-powered cars but are designed to combust hydrogen fuel instead of gasoline. While they produce fewer emissions than gasoline engines, they can still emit some pollutants like nitrogen oxides.

The development and adoption of vetyautojen are part of a broader global effort to transition to cleaner transportation alternatives.
