The system was originally developed in the early 20th century to improve safety for fishermen and coastal travelers, though it has since expanded to support all road users.
These shelters are typically small, unmanned cabins or huts located at strategic intervals along remote stretches

Vettvangsstöðvar are not intended for overnight stays but serve as a last-resort option for those stranded.
