Vettvangsstöðvar, or "shelter stations" in Icelandic, are a network of emergency shelters established along Iceland’s coastal routes to provide assistance to travelers in distress, particularly those facing adverse weather conditions or mechanical failures. The system was originally developed in the early 20th century to improve safety for fishermen and coastal travelers, though it has since expanded to support all road users.

These shelters are typically small, unmanned cabins or huts located at strategic intervals along remote stretches of Iceland’s roads, especially in areas prone to harsh weather. Each station is equipped with basic amenities such as a stove, fuel, water, and emergency supplies, including food, blankets, and communication devices. While not staffed, they are designed to offer temporary refuge until help arrives or conditions improve.

The shelters are maintained by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Veðurstofa Íslands and Veðurstofa Íslands’ road division) in collaboration with local authorities. They are part of a broader safety network that includes roadside signs, emergency call boxes, and weather monitoring systems. The system is particularly critical during winter, when storms and snow can isolate travelers for extended periods.

Vettvangsstöðvar are not intended for overnight stays but serve as a last-resort option for those stranded. Travelers are strongly advised to carry emergency supplies, including warm clothing, food, and a charged mobile phone, as well as to monitor weather forecasts before embarking on remote journeys. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (Veðurstofa Íslands) provides real-time updates on road conditions and weather alerts to help prevent unnecessary risks.

While the network has significantly improved road safety, it remains a reminder of Iceland’s challenging environment. Proper preparation and caution are essential for anyone traveling outside of urban areas.
